Map shows survey plan and notes of part of Lot 5 of the Eagle's Nest Tract (now called Eagle Place) in Brantford Ontario. The area shown in this map was part of the territory of the Neutral Confederacy (Attawandaron), a political and cultural union of Iroquoian-speaking nations, up until the mid 17th century when-- combined with factors such as famine and diseases introduced by colonialists--they were dispersed by the events of the Beaver Wars, and assimilated with Haudenosaunee Confederacy nations. The area was also populated by the members of the Mississauga Nation (Anishinaabe) during the 17th century. The city of Brantford would later become part of the Haldimand Proclamation, a decree which granted land previously purchased from the Mississauga nation to the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations) who had served the Crown during the American Revolution. The city of Brantford is named after Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea), a Mohawk military and political leader who had allied with the Crown during the American Revolution. Brant was a key negotiator in the development of the Haldimand Proclamation.
