The fonds consists of four diaries or daily journals kept by Deborah Hurcomb during her time as a Nursing Sister in the Boer War. The diaries begin with Deborah Hurcomb's journey out to South Africa, and detail the weather, distance traveled, the condition of the horses, and the people on board ship. Later entries include items of news of battles, personnel and social engagements. The first diary concludes with her journey back to Canada from South Africa, on board the ship HM Transport Roslin Castle.

The second diary continues to detail the journey home to Canada, recording deaths and personnel. She returned to South Africa in 1902, on her second tour of duty. The remaining two diaries contain information of Deborah Hurcomb's nursing work in Canada, at the Perley Home in Ottawa, and some private nursing work, as well as details of her social life.
