Note this is a preliminary description. Sub-series consists of records that were maintained in the second version of the NRC's File Information System (FIS v 2) that was in use from 1992-2012. The records in the series were maintained by the NRC's Executive Offices or Corporate Services areas. The records relate to a very wide range of NRC activities through the twentieth century.

The sub-series is organized into sub-sub-series according to the files' office of origin, as indicated by the file number prefix, or according to the "theme" of the records (for "finance" and "security.") Records pertaining to organization, committees, conferences, and co-operation and liaison are generally found across all sub-sub-subseries, as are other records. The sub-sub-series for Corporate Services contains substantial records relating to audit, planning and assessment, business relations, marketing, and intellectual property such as patents. Note the NRC used a "00" or "NRC" prefix for records for which no office of origin was immediately apparent, in some cases because these were records brought forward from the previous records system.

The subject file classification system used for FIS v 2 used a four digit number to identify primary subjects. Administrative records were filed in the 0100-5999 blocks, and operational records were filed in the 6000-9899 blocks, generally speaking. Each NRC institute was assigned a distinct block of primary numbers, within the operational blocks. Secondary and tertiary subjects were created as required. All files considered active in 1992 were brought forward into the FIS v 2 and relabelled.

Note some sub-sub-series records at the accession level may be reviewed for archival value; many were sent to the archives on selective retention, but selection has yet to occur.
