Canadian Mediterranean Institute : The Canadian Mediterranean Institute, 1980-1995, was a Canadian-based umbrella institution headquartered in Ottawa. It was established late in 1980 as a private non-profit charitable organization, federally registered. Generally, the aims of the organization were to help Canadians in Mediterranean countries in the following manner: assist and promote research by Canadian scholars and artists in the Mediterranean area, to provide information, assistance and research support to said scholars and artists, to establish and to maintain close and mutually helpful relations with the appropriate agencies of Mediterranean governments and, where necessary for this purpose, to open, staff and maintain offices in Mediterranean countries and to stimulate interest in the role of the Institute and the work of its members through publications, the organization of lectures, conferences, exhibitions and the development of scholarship and study programmes.

The Institute was created by merging the Canadian Archaelogical Institute at Athens, the Canadian Academic Centre in Italy and the Canadian Institute in Italy, and accepting financial, administrative and programme responsibility for all three.

The Board of Trustees was composed of up to thirty-six Canadian residents, business people from across the country and others having knowledge of the Mediterranean. The Board at all times included an ex-officio representative of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities.

The Institute was funded from various sources, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council, universities and membership.
