The Professional Correspondence series overlaps the Confidential Memoranda from Ottawa series and the Prime Minister's files series, but is oriented more broadly on Victor Mackie's career in print journalism and social relationships arising from his work. It comprises chronological files covering the years from his start in journalism with the Regina Leader-Post in the 1940s through to his freelance work in retirement in the 1980s; nominal files mostly from the 1980s; and records of his involvement in the executive of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, 1955-1965. The chronological files hold correspondence with Free Press journalists, editors, and publishers like Ted Dafoe, Clifford Sifton, Dick Malone, Shane MacKay, Grant Dexter, and Murray Burt; and letters from politicians like Duff Roblin, Ross Thatcher, Bob Winters, John Diefenbaker, Robert Stanfield, George Hees, Ray Hnatyshyn, and Robert Coates.

The nominal files hold valuable selections of letters from Don Mazankowski, Bruce Hutchison, Mel Jack, and Dick Malone, but perhaps most notable is the large block of correspondence with Kenneth R. Thomson, long-time president and owner of Thomson Newspapers. Thomson subscribed to Mackie's "Ottawa letter" in the 1980s. The carbon copies of Mackie's "Ottawa letter" offer detailed analysis of the political scene; in his replies Thomson comments on political events and encloses personal news. The Parliamentary Press Gallery files discuss the move of the Press Gallery from Parliament in 1965, and also contain several programmes for the gallery's annual dinners during the St. Laurent and Diefenbaker years which poke fun at political events and figures.
