This series comprises carbon copies of Mackie's weekly confidential memoranda from Parliament Hill back to the Winnipeg Free Press. Not strictly for publication, the memoranda gave his editors and publishers, including Victor Sifton and later Dick Malone, the inside information they required to set the editorial policy of the Free Press and comment on national events. Mackie's memoranda also provided politicians with an off-the-record channel to communicate directly with the Free Press. This series is far from complete; it is deepest for the years 1955-1956 and 1975-1977.

For example, his memoranda of 1955-1956 report on Louis St. Laurent's reaction to a by-election loss in Toronto Spadina and offer extensive commentary on the Suez crisis, including an appraisal of its impact on Lester Pearson's stock in the Liberal party as a potential successor to St. Laurent (file 1-3). Political figures like C. D. Howe, Jimmy Gardiner, George Drew, and John Diefenbaker feature prominently in the memoranda from these years. His memoranda from the mid-1970s give assessments of the ability of Pierre Trudeau's cabinet ministers and devote considerable attention to the role of John Turner in the cabinet and his relationship with Trudeau. Mackie's reports in the 1970s reveal the increasing alienation of the western Canada with the Trudeau government.
