Lees, Gene, 1928-2010 : Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Gene Lees worked as a reporter for the Spectator, the Telegram, and the Montreal Star; in 1955 he became music critic for the Louisville Times. In the United States, he was editor of the jazz magazine Down Beat (1959-62), critic for the New York Stereo Review (1962-65), and a regular columnist in 1965 for High Fidelity. Lees also published numerous articles in periodicals such as Maclean's, the New York Times and the Globe and Mail. He has written the lyrics to many popular songs, including the big hit Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars, with music by Antonio Carlos Jobim.
