Collection comprises two watercolours depicting ships wintering at Barrow Strait 1850-51. Both watercolours were executed by George Frederick McDougall (ca. 1825-1871), 2nd master on H.M.S. Resolute (Captain Horatio T. Austin), during the Second Franklin Search Expedition. The expedition included H.M.S. Resolute, Assistance, Intrepid and Pioneer. One depicts a group of ships locked in ice, and the other shows one ship that has listed to its side in the ice at Barrow Strait. The latter work is signed with monogram GFMcD. Both works are approximately the same size the first: 17.2 x 27.0 cm (sight) and the second: 18.1 x 29.9 cm (sight).
