Newsreel story filmed in France on 17 July 1944 about Canadian sports figures serving in France. They are shown at a Canadian camouflaged batter site. The sports figures are serving in the Canadian army. A few days later, Major Conn Smythe, veteran hockey star and manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was seriously wounded by enemy gun fire. According to a news dispatch, Major Smythe, in charge of an anti-aircraft battery defending French bridges held by Canadian troops, was knocked out by a fragment of enemy shell that exploded near his position. According to the dispatch he has been evacuated to England. The footage shot prior to his being wounded shows: medium shot, showing left to right: Lieutenant Bill [Laak], Captain Jim Boackh, former Ontario amateur golf champion and Major Conn Smythe of Toronto, sitting at a table discussing old times; shot of the same people, but from a different angle, checking a position on a map; medium shot, showing, from left to right: Lt. 1. Subject description is basedon NFB news release, which gives the title of this item as MAJOR CONNIE SMYTHE WOUNDED IN FRANCE, and states that this Canadian film material submitted by the NFB has been approved and passed by Canadian censors.~2. The NFB news release also says "Please credit Canadian Army Film Unit".~3. The news release is annotated by the Fox newsreel story number 52-548H. 52-548A is also written over the text, but it appears to have been crossed out.~4. This was used in the Canadian edition of FOX MOVIETONE NEWS, Volume 26, Number 97.~5. Parts of the NFB news release is hard to read because of the Fox numbers written over the text.
