Young, Doug, 1940- : Politician cabinet minister

M. Douglas Young was born on 20 September 1940 in Tracadie, N.B. Educated at St. Thomas University and the University of New Brunswick, he was a lawyer prior to the beginning of his career in politics.

Young was first elected to the N.B. Legislature in the general election of 1978 and was re-elected in 1982 and 1987. From 1981 - 1983 he was leader of the N.B. Liberal Party. On Nov. 1987, he was appointed Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Young began his federal political career upon election to the House of Commons in the general election of 1988. While in Opposition, Young was the Liberal Critic for Finance and Financial Institutions, and was the Liberal Treasury Board Critic. Following re-election in the general election of 1993, Young was sworn to the Privy Council on 4 Nov. 1993 and appointed Minister of Transport. Following the resignation of the Hon. David Collenette in late 1996, Young became Minister of National Defence and Veterans Affairs.
