NCSM Halifax : Premier d'une éventuelle série de douze frégates porte-hélicoptères de conception canadienne, ce navire allie les capacités traditionnelles de lutte anti-sous-marine du Canada et les systèmes de lutte contre les menaces à la surface et dans les airs. Bien équilibrés et polyvalents, les navires de la classe HALIFAX sont la pierre angulaire des groupes opérationnels de la Marine canadienne.
Après des décennies d'incessantes activités de lutte anti-sous-marine dans l'Atlantique Nord durant la guerre froide, la Marine a, dans les années 1980 et 1990, modifié sa stratégie à long terme pour s'orienter vers des rôles élargis et plus généraux, de manière à s'adapter aux nouvelles menaces pour la paix et la stabilité dans le monde. Les frégates de la classe Halifax sont à la fine pointe de la technologie. Avec leurs systèmes de communications intégrés de commande des machines, d'armement, de détection et de propulsion, elles constituent de remarquables plate-formes sur le plan défensif et offensif. Elles sont silencieuses et rapides et offrent d'excellentes caractéristiques en matière de navigabilité.
Vers le milieu des années 1990, le NCSM HALIFAX a effectué des patrouilles dans la mer Adriatique, au sein de la Force navale permanente de l'Atlantique, de manière à faire respecter les sanctions imposées contre l'ex-Yougoslavie par les Nations Unies. Peu de temps après, le NCSM VANCOUVER s'est rendu de l'autre côté du Pacifique pour participer aux exercices multinationaux au large de Hawaï, ce qui a permis de faire ressortir l'importance grandissante des intérêts du Canada dans les pays riverains du Pacifique. Ces exercices ont marqué un point tournant dans l'histoire de la Marine. Aujourd'hui, les frégates de la classe HALIFAX se déploient partout dans le monde, seules ou au sein d'un groupe opérationnel (OTAN, groupes aéronavals américains ou forces navales alliées). Ces déploiements témoignent de la confiance des autres pays envers le Canada et sont rendus possibles grâce à notre flotte de frégates de patrouille modernes et polyvalentes.
Les frégates de la classe HALIFAX disposent d'un arsenal sensationnel constitué de divers systèmes d'armes et de détection, dont 8 missiles surface-surface à longue portée Harpoon, 16 missiles surface-air Sea Sparrow, un canon à tir rapide Bofors de 57 mm, un système de défense rapprochée (CIWS) Phalanx de 20 mm, 8 mitrailleuses de 12,7 mm et 24 torpilles anti-sous-marines autoguidées. Par ailleurs, ces navires ont aussi des systèmes d'autodéfense : suppression infrarouge, leurres Shield, paillettes, fusées, leurre acoustique remorquée et dispositifs de brouillage de radar et de sonar. L'hélicoptère embarqué, qui est équipé de torpilles, accroît considérablement son efficacité opérationnelle.
