Fonds comprises of four letters: a letter from Joseph Pope to Rathbun; a letter from John A. Macdonald to Rathbun; a letter from Lady Susan Agnes Macdonald to Rathbun; and the draft of a letter from Rathbun to Lady Macdonald. As noted in the Joseph Pope letter, the John A. Macdonald letter is the last letter that Macdonald ever signed.

Rathbun, E. W. (Edward Wilkes), 1842-1903 : Edward Wilkes Rathbun was born on 5 Oct. 1842 in Auburn, N.Y. Educated in New York City, he was active as businessman in that city until 1862, when he moved to Mill Point, Upper Canada (later Deseronto, Ontario) on the Bay of Quinte, where his father had established a sawmill. In 1864, he became the manager of the operation. He soon emerged as a bold and progressive entrepreneur. In addition to becoming a leading lumber baron, Rathbun operated a number of lumber-related industries. He also launched the Deseronto Flour Mill, the Napanee Cement Works, the Deseronto Navigation Company, the Deseronto Gas Works, and other diverse enterprises.

Rathbun approached politics with the same shrewdness that characterized his entrepreneurial career. An effective lobbyist, he was on good terms with both Liberal and Conservative administrations. A founder of the Canadian Forestry Association, Rathbun experienced several business reversals in the late 1890s. He died at Deseronto in 1903.

Custodial history:

Correspondence remained with the Rathbun family until Nora H. Rathbun gave it to Louise Graves. Graves donated it to Library and Archives Canada in 1997.
