Description:

Produced on the eve of Newfoundland's entry into the Confederation as a means of introducing the province to the rest of Canada.~This film depicts the life-style, labour and island character of the people. Notable sequences include: the stalking and eventual harpooning of a fin-back whale; a local doctor travelling by dog team over rough terrain to make house calls, during one sequence the doctor breaks up a fight between the leader, who had been stealing the others food, and the rest of the pack; three generations of fishermen from the same family embarking on a day's work; sealing footage including the clubbing of seal pups, hauling skins, flagging skins for later pick-up; cod fishing footage aboard trawlers. <38mn 9s>

1. Pre-update, Pre-revision: This version was produced prior to an update featuring Gordon Pinsent in a new introduction and prior to a revision when the sealing footage, considered controversial, was edited.~2. Additional information on this film may be available in the production file (Manuscript Division MG 28 III 99, Volume 2).~3. The film was not well received in Newfoundland. Several revisions were made following the film's first release in an effort to please everyone concerned.~4. The subtitle A TALE OF OUTPORT ADVENTURE was added in 1951 amid criticism of the rural focus of the film by Newfoundlanders.~5. During this production in October of 1949 Paul Harris, a sound editor, signed on as a new crew member. (Mentioned in a letter from Budge Crawley to Newfoundland Canada Steamship Line February 15, 1950).~6. Correspondence in the file seems to indicate that Cecily Sparks was originally chosen to direct the film but had to relinquish the position when the sealing ships refused to take a woman aboard for the sealing expedition.~7. The film took much longer than expected and Imperial Oil became quite displeased with the delays.~8. Fishing trawlers in the cod fishing sequence were likely named the Nina and the Bluefoam.~9. Please see ISN 213392 [SEALING : OUT-TAKES] for further sealing footage that is more complete and graphic in nature.~10. Although not listed on the credits, Chrzanowska's first name was Cecily.~11. Budge Crawley, the creator of this film, died in 1987.
