The fonds consists primarily of commercially produced feature films along with some privately produced documentary films. This fonds is emblematic of the Library and Archives' comprehensive approach to feature film acquisition and represents less established film production that does not receive the acclaim enjoyed by more documented feature work. In combination with more mainstream film production, and the more established Canadian documentary filmmaking tradition featured in the collections of the National Film Board (NFB) and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), these productions provide researchers and scholars with a complete view of film production history in Canada. The contribution of these films is a valuable asset and compliments the holdings of the Library and Archives.
The fonds provides further historical examples of the production work of Canadian talent, producers, director, actors (including Christopher Plummer, Donald Sutherland and John Vernon) and production crew members, some at the early stages of their careers and who would continue to form the Canadian film community in their future work.
The fonds consists of film elements and videos for 31 feature films, three documentaries and the theatrical trailers of the feature films. All the feature films run approximately 90 minutes and are arranged in either ten, 10 minute rolls or five, 20 minute rolls. Trailers, one roll each, run between two and five minutes. The series episodes run 17, 23 or 24 minutes.
The printing elements include many original negatives as well as duplicate negatives, optical tracks, some one-inch video and reference VHS videocassettes. These master and printing elements will allow for the future reproduction of the collection by the Library and Archives, for preservation and future reference access use. The VHS reference copies provided by the donor will enable immediate access and effective use of the collection.
