Interviw by Diane Rogers of Jessie Lucas, former secretary, registrar-bursar and secretary-treasurer of Frontier College, about her memories of Alfred Fitzpatrick, founder of Frontier College. Miss Lucas begins by describing Alfred Fitzpatrick's striking appearance, his early education in Nova Scotia and his arts and theological studies at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. She talks about his patoral work that brought him into contact with men working in isolated mining and lumbering camps and thus sparked a lifelong dedication to improving the educational opportunities for such men. She continues with details of Fitzpatrick's efforts to hire instructors, obtain educational supplies and secure funding for the fledgling Frontier College in the early 1900s. Also discussed is the role of A. Fitzpatrick's brothers in establishing Frontier College and the early camps served by Frontier College in the Georgian Bay and Colbalt areas. Other topics discussed during the interview include some of the inventions designed by Mr. Fitzpatrick to improve life in camps with few facilities, the films of Frontier College, the withdrawal of government funding over the issue of degree-granting status for Frontier College, Mr. Fitzpatrick's relief efforts during the Halifax explosion, his generosity and devoutness, details of the granting in 1922 and the abrogation of Clause 10 of Frontier College's Charter in 1930 and the subsequent resignation of Mr. Fitzpatrick. Miss Lucas concludes with a discussion of the financial difficulties faced by Frontier College during the depression and the death of Mr. Fitzpatrick in 1936.~The tape also contains a biography of Jessie Lucas by Diane Rogers.
