Fonds comprises original editorial cartoons by George Shane, used in various trade union publications and newspapers across Canada. The artist focusses predominantly on labour issues. Covering over four decades, the cartoons emphasize the plight of the worker and the tenuous position of trade unions in a time of global markets. Subjects of notes are the economy, Free Trade Agreement, Canada-U.S. relations, the publishing and culture industries, job cuts, education, automation, environmental concerns, the nuclear arms race, health care and social services. Of particular note are works which illustrate the deletorious effects of privatization and cut-backs to social programs.

Personalities depicted are Prime Ministers Lester B. Pearson, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Joe Clark, John Turner, Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell, and Jean Chrétien. Many of the major Cabinet Ministers serving over the last four decades are portrayed. Prominent among provincial leaders are Mike Harris, Lucien Bouchard, Jean Charest, Bob Rae, and Ralph Klein.

The collection offers a substantial number of illustrations on the theme of the worker and the work place and focusses on issues better represented in trade union papers than daily newspapers.

Shane, George, 1921- : George Shane was born in Winnipeg in 1921. Before the Second World War, he started cartooning for several western papers, including the Calgary Herald and the Winnipeg Free Press. After serving in the Air Force during the war, he studied fine art and illustration in New York City and enjoyed much success with his gag cartoons. In the late 1940s, Shane returned to Canada and worked for both Saturday Night and The Montrealer. With the establishment of his own commercial art studio, he worked in alliance with the Canadian Labour Congress. Throughout a lengthy career of over four decades as a freelance artist, the cartoonist's focus has been on labour politics and issues. His work has appeared in trade and labour publications across the country.

In addition to his editorial cartoon work, George Shane has been the subject of numerous painting exhibitions. He continues to teach portraiture in Toronto.
