This fonds consists of correspondence, notes, reports, memoranda, faxes and the occasional clipping detailing Mr. Coates' varied career. The fonds reflects his work as a researcher for and advisor to the Liberal Party, to various ministers and to Prime Minister John N. Turner, as well as his activity as executive assistant / advisor to the Hon. Robert Andras, and speech-writer and advisor to the Hon. Bernard Valcourt. It details portions of his life as a senior governmental administrator, as well activities in private life (on Board of Directors of Repap Enterprises). Finally, it reflects Mr. Coates' interest and activity in think-tank activity; he was the moving force behind "Scenarios for the Future", which brought together leading lights from the worlds of business, government and academia to plot out the best course for Canada's future development within the context of a rapidly changing world.

This fonds holds particularly valuable "insider memoranda" written by Mr. Coates to his political bosses, particularly to the Hon Robert Andras and the Rt. Hon John N. Turner, which address volatile issues of government mismanagement and, possibly, corruption. The memos in the Turner series are extraordinarily revealing about Mr. Turner himself, as well as the behind-the-scenes activity of his government.

There is also a run of original W.L.M. King material, approximately 30 cm in extent), which consists of correspondence between Mr. King and his Minister of Labour, Mitchell Humphrey (1941-1944), as well as other original material on labour-management issues (1916-1941), and especially dealing with strikes during the Second World War (1916-1946).

The fonds also comprises audiocassettes and videocassettes documenting the Scenarios for the Future Project roundtable discussions that took place between 1996 and 1997.

Coates, Daniel, 1940- : Daniel Coates was born in Haifax in 1940. As a child, in 1949 he emigrated with his family to Montreal. He attended Sir George Williams University in the 1960s. Active in student life, he was elected president of student body. He continued graduate studies at Cornell University, where he obtained his PhD. He held a number of significant posts with the Liberal Party (Director of Policy, for example). In 1968-1973 he served as advisor to the Hon. Robert Andras. In 1984-1986 he was advisor to the Rt. Hon. John N. Turner, and later advisor to the Hon. Bernard Valcourt, the Hon. Michael Harcourt of British Columbia and, briefly, the Rt. Hon. Kim Campbell. Between appointments as advisor, he served in the government of Canada at senior Deputy Minister level and as Assistant Deputy Minister in various departments and agencies (such as the Unemployment Insurance Commission), and on various task forces. He was president and CEO of "Scenarios for the Future", a national non-profit organization founded by over thirty prominent Canadians to further dialogue about strategic directions for Canada at the dawn of the new millenium.
