The series comprises Richard J. Doyle's alphabetical subject files from his employment with the "Globe and Mail" between 1951 and 1983. They provide a behind the scenes look at journalism as practiced at the newspaper during these years and its operation as a business enterprise. The files primarily hold correspondence and memoranda from within the "Globe" concerning issues of ownership and management, editorial policy, and news content. His correspondents included owners like George McCullagh, Howard Webster, and Kenneth Thomson; and publishers Oakley Dalgleish, Richard S. Malone, George Currie, and Roy Megarry. Among journalists and other public figures, there are files for George Bain, Leonard Brockington, June Callwood, Clark Davey, John Fraser, Trent Frayne, Leslie Frost, Colin McCullough, E. B. Richards, Jeffrey Simpson, Keith Spicer, William Stevenson, Scott Symons, William Thorsell, and Clare Westcott. Some of the issues for which Doyle kept subject files are bilingualism, Canadian nationalism, communism, Globe and Mail - national edition, journalism, the Newspaper Guild, racial discrimination, and writers.
