Albums kept at RCAF (later CFB) base Penhold, Penhold, Alta., documenting the social and professional activities of the base, during the period 1951 until the early 1990s. These albums were created from photographs taken by the base photographic staff, and are primarily concerned with the social and ceremonial side of base life. There is, as a result, very little covering the operational activities of the base, the physical plant, the equipment, munitions, or supplies. The various albums are generally large and ornate, usually with at least some information available to identify the photographs, and generally cover a period of several years of base activities. While the photographs do indicate some social changes (for example, religious activity is evident during the 1950s but subsequently disappears; women as officers make their appearance during the 1980s), in general they deal with presentations of trophies and awards (for example, to cadets, pilot trainees, and sports teams); official changes of command; parades -- both formal military and parades for fairs and exhibitions; visiting dignitaries and military; social activities on the base and in the officers' mess; some views of the base, its buildings and layout; some views of training aircraft -- particularly the Harvard trainer; Air Force days during the 1950s; etc.
All photographs in albums were glued or drymounted in place; the loose photographs were all coded with coding from the photo unit. It would appear that photos were selected (by whom is unknown) in order to be included in albums. From the well-used nature of some of the albums, it appears that they were extensively purused.
