Thompson, Gordon V. (Gordon Vincent), 1888-1965 : Author-composer and music publisher born in Ontario, Gordon Vincent Thompson composed many songs of a religious and patriotic nature. During the First World War, an opportune time for patriotic songs, he had a number of successes with pieces such as Where Is My Boy Tonight? (1915), Red Cross Nell and Khaki Jim (1916), When We Wind Up the Watch on the Rhine (1917) and For the Glory of the Grand Old Flag (1918). In 1918 Thompson established the Authors and Composers Association of Canada in order to protect and promote the rights of author-composers. Manager of the Canadian branch of U.S. music publisher Leo Feist (1919-32), Thompson founded Gordon V. Thompson Ltd., a music publishing, retail sales and distribution company, in 1932 in Toronto. The company's publications included numerous patriotic songs, educational material and, around 1950, works by such composers as Claude Champagne, Robert Fleming, Arnold Walter and Oskar Morawetz. Upon Gordon V. Thompson's death in 1965, John C. Bird succeeded him as president of the publishing house, holding the position until his retirement in 1988.
