Betts, Lorne M. (Lorne Matheson), 1918-1985 : A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Lorne M. Betts attended the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto from 1947 to 1953, where he worked under the direction of John Weinzweig. In 1950 he was appointed music director at St. Paul's Church in Hamilton, Ontario. In that city he held the positions of principal at the Conservatory, organist and choirmaster at Melrose Church, and music critic for the Hamilton Spectator newspaper. His important works include the opera Riders to the Sea (1955), Kanadario: Music for a Festival Occasion (1966) and Mass of Saint Thomas.
