Eckhardt-Gramatté, S.C. (Sophie Carmen), 1899-1974 : Compositrice, pianiste, violoniste et professeure originaire de Russie, Sophie Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté (née Fridman) débute, à Paris, l'étude du piano avec sa mère. En 1909, elle est acceptée au Conservatoire de Paris où elle étudie le violon avec Alfred Brun et Guillaume Rémy, le piano avec Mme S. Chenée ainsi que la musique de chambre avec Vincent d'Indy et Camille Chevillard. Vers 1915, elle reçoit à Berlin une bourse qui lui permet de perfectionner sa technique de l'archet avec le célèbre violoniste Bronislav Huberman. Virtuose du violon et du piano, Eckhardt-Gramatté se produit en récital, entre autres, à Paris, Berlin, Genève, Barcelone et aux États-Unis avec l'Orchestre de Philadelphie et l'Orchestre symphonique de Chicago. En 1930, l'artiste délaisse sa carrière de concertiste et se consacre à la composition. Elle remporte plusieurs prix dont celui de l'État autrichien pour son Triple concerto (1950). En 1953, elle s'installe à Winnipeg (Manitoba) avec son deuxième époux et donne son premier concert canadien à la radio du réseau anglais de la Société Radio-Canada. Elle se livre également, au Canada, à la composition et à l'enseignement privé. Parmi les oeuvres de la compositrice, mentionnons sa Symphonie no 2 (Manitoba), son Concerto pour basson et orchestre, son Quatuor à cordes no 3 et sa Sonate no 6 pour piano.
