Kyle Sanguin has worked for the past five years for High Country Forest and Fire, a privately owned business that offers its services to the provincial government, forestry industry and private individuals. Specializing in prescribed burning in forests, the company was requested to assist with the Okanagan Mountain Fire in August and September of 2003 when that fire grew at an enormous rate and threatened the towns of Naramata and Kelowna. Kyle photographed his 20-man crew, under the leadership of Jim Stewart, working in areas expected to be engulfed by the forest fire, attempting to reduce the damage to the forest and existing properties in the area extending from Naramata, through to the Bertram Creek area in which many houses were burned. The crew is depicted "backburning" or "backfiring," burning loose material on the forest floor in an attempt to slow the forest fire. Photographs also depict the Kettle Valley Trestles being coated in fire retardant.
