Collection comprises wood engravings produced for "The London Graphic," dating 1875-1885. They are prints by various engravers after the works of various artists including W.E.A., B., J.R.B., W.H.J.B., John Charles Dollman, G. Durand, G.F., Gray, J.H., Sydney Prior Hall, Horace Harral, C.G.K., J. Nash, W.R., Mathew White Ridley, C. Roberts, Samuel Edmund Waller.

Subjects include: the Arctic expedition of the "Alert" and the "Discovery" commanded by G.S. Nares, with portraits of Nares, Capt. Stephenson, Lieut Beaumont, Dr. Coppinger; sketch of the grave of Capt. Hall of the "Polaris" and replacement of headboard; funeral of Hans Christian Petersen, the Danish interpreter; wintering of the vessels and crew, equipment, transportation, dog sleds, icebergs, floebergs, exercise spot, Inuit, and "Upernavik the most northerly settlement in the world." Also scenes of winter life in Halifax; in Manitoba: settler's activities, hunting and fishing, railway cars, and some sketches of Aboriginals; scenes in British Columbia of Aboriginals, fishing, logging scenes, the visit of the Princess Louise and the Marquis of Lorne to Victoria, and the grave of Zadoski the Indian Chief - Fraser River, Quamichan Indian Village, Cowichan River, Vancouver Island.

The Graphic : "The Graphic" is an illustrated weekly newspaper/magazine that was founded by William Luson Thomas and published in London, England, from Vol. 1, no. 1 (December 4, 1869) to Vol. 135, no. 3254 (April 23, 1932). It was a superior publication and is an important element in the history of pictorial journalism. It continued as "The National Graphic" (April 28 to July 1932): nos. 3255 - 3266, after which it was discontinued.

The paper was known as a publication of quality that included reproductions in wood-engraving of illustrations sometimes in the form of full-page drawings in its weekly editions. The policy of William Thomas was to hire artists of talent regardless of what media they used, rather than limit his staff to only skilful wood engravers. As a result the work of many talented contemporary British artists and engravers appeared in the paper, artists such as John Charles Dollman, Sydney Prior Hall, Horace Harral, and Matthew White Ridley, and Samuel Edmund Waller to name but some. The reports often highlighted Canadian subject matter, such as search and discovery expeditions in the Arctic, observations of unique Canadian geography and activity, to royal and vice-regal tours such as the 1881 cross Canada tour by John Douglas Sutherland Cambell Lorne (Marquis of). Lorne was Governor General of Canada from 1878-1883, and his tour was documented for the Graphic by the artist and journalist Sydney Prior Hall.

Collection is comprised of loose pages in good to fair condition. Concern is with handling.

Custodial history:

Collection purchased from the Astrolabe Gallery, Mr. John Coles, 71 Sparks St., Ottawa, Ontario. Brought in by-hand via Jim Burant April 18, 2002. Purchased on April 26, 2002 (as per acquisition advice).
