Sub-series consists of records relating to the role of the Clerk's Office in managing the leasing and sale of Reserved Lands - be they Crown Reserves, Clergy Reserves (including glebe lands), Military Reserves, or other lands "reserved" at some point by the Crown from allocation and then, subsequently, opened for disposal. Included are records relating to both the leasing of such lands and, ultimately after policy changes, their sale. Records relating to the disposal of Crown Reserve lands through the vehicle of the Canada Company are included as well.

Records include, but are not limited to, a register of petitions for leases, 1797-1838; a register of orders for leases sent to the Attorney General, 1801-1811; a return of lands under location before 1832 for which no descriptions were issued; a register of petitions for leases of Crown and Clergy Reserves, 1801-1838; various records relating to the occupation of glebe lots; miscellaneous correspondence, returns, reports and accounts concerning leasing of Crown and Clergy Reserves, 1802-1841; extract minutes of the Executive Council relating to the Canada Company as well as descriptions, assignments and reports of settlers placed on land by the Canada Company.

Textual records (Paper) Finding Aid MSS1802, commonly called the "Upper Canada Land Index", is an alphabetical nominal card index. It serves, primarily, the records found elsewhere within this fonds in the two series titled: Land Submissions to the Executive Council; and Land Minute Books of the Executive Council. One volume in the present sub-series (vol. 561) was included within the series which is now titled Land Submissions of the Executive Council, at the time at which finding aid MSS1802 was created. That finding aid may be useful for locating information (especially personal names) in vol. 561. MSS1802 (90: Open)

Textual records (Paper) Finding Aid MSS1802 has been microfilmed (reels C-10810 to C-10836 and H-1976 to H-1978). The CAB RG 1 Shelf List (see RG 1, L3 section) includes a microfilm shelf list for these reels. Custodial history:

While the majority of the records in this sub-series were acquired from the Privy Council Office in 1907, the return of lands under location before 1832 for which no descriptions were issued (RG 1, L6B, vol. 21) and an account for sales of Clergy Reserves, 1836 (RG 1, L7, vol. 32) were transferred from the Privy Council Office in 1939 (see Accession Registers - Accession reference CR. 1939-15).

Microfilming of vol. 561 (formerly included within RG 1, series L3) was undertaken in 1962-1965 and re-filmed in 1991-1992. The microfilmed copy is available on reel C-2984.
