Date:1778-1842.Reference:R10870-16-5-E, RG1-E11Type of material:Textual materialFound in:Archives / Collections and FondsItem ID number:205010Date(s):1778-1842.Place of creation:Québec (Province)Extent:0.75 cm of textual records.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Series consists of a register of oaths of allegiance; oaths of office and allegiance for the Legislative Council and House of Assembly; oaths of office and allegiance for Justices of the Peace, notaries, advocates attorneys, Customs and related officials and pilots. All government officials were obliged to take an oath of allegiance and an oath for the faithful discharge of their duties. The registration of the oath of office was taken by the Governor and ,members of his Council, by members of Parliament, and by senior officials was recorded on parchments, not bound into volumes. The oaths of allegiance required of recipients of land grants, however, were recorded on paper in bound registers. As each commissioner of oaths maintained his own registers, the surviving records in this sub-series exhibit a complex pattern of overlapping dates. Some Commissions authorizing individuals to take oaths are included with the volumes. While assumed to have been preserved by the Clerk of the Executive Council, the registered oaths of allegiance and oaths of office surviving in this sub-series include many items created in and for other offices. The surviving records found here are by no means complete.Additional information:Related material:For reports of the oath-taking by the Lieutenant Governor and his Executive Council, see the state minutes (State Minute Books of the Executive Council series, elsewhere within this fonds).Source:PrivateFormer archival reference no.:RG1-E11 -
