This relationship provokes nothing but anger from Komak the local hunter who is jealous of the bear's skills. Komak seeks to turn the people against the bear, and plots the bear's demise. Eventually, the bear must leave, for he is no longer safe among the Inuit. The Old Woman is content to retell the story of the bear that she raised.
