Fonds consists of letters written primarly to Mrs. Elizabeth Catherine Ross and to her eldest son, David, concerning the death of General Robert Ross in battle near Baltimore on 12 September 1814, and the state of his tomb at Halifax, Nova Scotia. This material is located on microfilm reel A-2165.

Ross, Elizabeth Catherine, d.1845 : Elizabeth Catherine Ross married Robert Ross in London, England, on 2 Dec. 1802. She was the daughter of W. Glascock and had several children of whom two sons and one daughter survived infancy. Her eldest son was named David. She nursed her husband at St. Jean de Luz after he was wounded. Three months later, Robert Ross went to America where he died in 1814. She died 12 May 1845.

Ross, Robert, 1766-1814 : Robert Ross, who won Bladensburg and took Washington, was the son of Major David Ross of Rosstrevor, an officer who served with distinction during the Seven Years' War. In 1813, Wellington gave Robert Ross the fusilier brigade and made him a major-general. In 1814, four brigades of infantry were sent to America: three of them to Canada and one as an expeditionary force against the coasts of the United States. Ross was selected for the command of the latter and embarked with it on 1 June 1814. Ross marched on Washington by way of Bladensburg and subsequently captured Washington.

The troops then went to Baltimore, landing at North Point on 12 September. In the ensuing battle against the Americans, Ross was mortally wounded. The attack on Baltimore was eventually abandoned.
