Fonds consists of photographs, taken primarily in Ontario, by C. D. Woodley of various public events and places. Photographs of activities undertaken by C. D. Woodley. Views taken in northern Ontario, including French and Montreal rivers, and Temagami; views around Georgian Bay; the Canadian National Exhibition, Toronto, 1930s; Ste. Anne de Beaupré, Quebec, 1933; people and activities in downtown Toronto, such as a blind accordionist, a paper boy, crowds on VE Day; activities of the Woodley family during the 1940s and 1950s; interiors of the Aldine Press, Toronto; a Dufaycolour transparency of a sign painter; views of Kingston and Ottawa, Ont.
Mr. Woodley has provided extensive captions for each item in the collection, often indicating the circumstances under which the photograph was made. These captions are keyed to the negatives.
Also included in fonds are moving image recordings shot by C.D. Woodley. The film footage, predominantly silent colour, dates from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Subjects include the Woodley family at home and on vacation, and visits to locations such as the Canadian National Exhibition, Gaspé and a maple sugar bush.
Film titles include: Boys and the Bees; Canoe Country; Glimpse of the Gaspé; Hidden Lakes; A Little Place in the Country; Maple Sugar Bush; Movie Club Visit to West Hill; My Entry -- Movie Contest; The Restful Hour; The Hobo or the Peregrinations of a Pie; Restless Water; The Running Gag Spreading the News; Surprise! Woodley, Charles Devenish, 1910-2003 : Charles Devenish Woodley was born on 5 July 1910 in Toronto, Ontario and died on 8 June 2003 in Toronto, Ontario. He studied at the University of Toronto. After graduation, he worked in his father's printing business, The Aldine Press. In 1937 he married Mary Wilson and together they raised three sons, Douglas, William and Lorne. In 1920 he began a serious hobby in photography. Woodley was also an avid traveller, making still photographs and films during his travels in North America and overseas. He was a member of the Toronto Movie Club. Late in his career as a printer, new technologies made the business less profitable and he returned to school to begin a new career. At the age of 55, he became a geography teacher. He taught for the next nine years at Western Technical Collegiate, taking his retirement at age 65. He showed some of the films he shot on his travels to his students as part of their geography lessons.
