The drawing was acquired framed and has since been removed from its frame. The drawing has been laid down on a secondary support consisting of a thin type of 19th century commercial paper board.

The overall condition of the drawing is good, with virtually no fade factor present in the work whatsoever. However there is some very noticeable foxing in the upper/sky area and on the right side of the drawing. The secondary support as well has become very acidic with the passage of time and consequently is now somewhat brittle, thereby presenting the possible risk of damage to the work, when being handled.

Acquired through Ritchie's Auctioneers & Appraisers, Toronto, from an unknown source. Previous owner: Gérard Morin, November 1947; Marceau Auctions, November 1947; unknown owner between ca. 1880 and 1947

On the verso of the secondary support a sheet of paper has been applied bearing the following handwritten inscription by a previous owner, "Cette aquarelle anonyme, qui représente probablement la chute de Saint-Nicolas (Lévis), est l'oeuvre d'un peintre anglais et date des environs de 1880. Elle a été acquise aux enchères Marceau le 18 novembre 1947. Elle appartient au soussigné. / Gérard Morin [...?] / le 24 novembre 47". - (This anonymous watercolour, which is probably the falls at Saint Nicolas (Lévis), is the work of an English painter and dates to circa 1880. It was acquired at Marceau Auctions on 18 November 1947. It is the property of the undersigned. / Gérard Morin [...?] / 24 November 47.
