Documentary of defence against air attacks. Sequences showing destruction caused by air raids in London, Chungking and Moscow with shots of listening posts, air raid wardens in the English city, grieving people in Chungking an people streaming into the underground in the Russian city. Cuts to similar destruction in a German city and the warming that the Allies will retaliate in kind. Russian bomber crews are briefed and board their aircraft. Flashback to pre-blitz period in London, civilian population preparing for the coming attacks: first aid practice, barrage balloons, evacuation of children, testing of blackout. On Aug. 8, 1940, the sirens sound and people retire to underground shelters. Heinkel, Dornier and Stuka bombers take off for a raid on London. Sequence on raid seen at ground level, fires, smoke and destruction and follow up as civilians come out, rescue casualties and carry on as usual.~During a subsequent raid, the Observer Corps and the Air Raid Wardens swing into action. War plant workers don steel helmets and continue their work. Following a brief sequence on an air battle, Fireguard personnel go to work on incendiary bomb fires. The British are shown retaliating with flights of bombers carrying block busters, Mosquito bombers flying low level missions and devastating raids on German cities. The camera focuses on Canadian efforts to plan against the eventuality of air attacks, to train personnel in charge of civil defence. The British Columbia air defence scheme is singled out with shots of ARP volunteers training, First Aid men and women practicing and personnel in charge of vital services planning their role in coming raids. Aerial of Vancouver. Siren sound and people go to shelters as the civil defence apparatus goes to work. Final sequences on the Air Force dispatching patrol planes to survey the coastal approaches.
