This first film in the CANADA CARRIES ON series describes the work of the Canadian seamen who manned the supply ships leaving from Canada's eastern ports during World War II.~This documentary on convoy protection in the North Atlantic shows the following activities. British warships, one sestroyer F-59, sailing past the camera in the distance, convoy ships, barrage balloon visible. Montage of the Canadian war effort, war plants, loading of wheat, foodstuffs, equipment into cargo ships. Naval officers make plans for the next convoy. Long sequences on life aboard a Canadian destroyer, with shots of the ship, the crew watching for U-Boats, relaxing, etc. Views of other ships in the convoy, of patrol Stranraer flying boats in flight. Men go to action stations, load and fire deck guns as the voices of the battery commanders are heard on the sound track. Shot of boiler room crew maintaining the 37 knot speed as ordered. Sequence on depth charges being loaded, fired and of the large explosion in the wake of the ship. At a given moment, British battleships take over the convoy. Shots of large warships, huge guns, bow smashing through sail. A Canadian destroyer is shown returning home through heavy seas as men take time to relax, sleep, etc. Final shot of the White Ensign. <10mn>
