The Landon Course of Cartooning was created by Charles N. Landon and published out of Cleveland, Ohio, during the period 1922-1924. This correspondence course comprised twenty-four parts entitled: Action; Anatomy, nos. 1 and 2; Caricaturing; Cartoon details; Cartoon ideas; Comic animals; Comic figures; The Comic strip; Composition nos. 1 and 2; Expression; Foreshortening and exaggerated action; Hands and feet; The Head; Kids; Pen and ink lines: Perspective; Serious cartoons; Shading; Shadows; Symbolic animals; Symbolic figures; and Women. Each section contains both explanatory text and visual examples to copy in order to develop skills.

The course, which took approximately a year to complete, was enormously popular and was the impetus behind the careers of many well-known cartoonists and comic strip artists. For an additional fee, correspondents could send their drawings back to Charles Landon for correction and comments.

Included with the booklets is a practice drawing of a figure, with critical commentary, executed by Eli Shainblum.

General note:

This correspondence course was originally owned by the donor's uncle Yechiel Shainblum, a well-known teacher in the Montreal Jewish community, who enrolled in the course in the 1920s. The course is donated in his name.
