This is a radio talk by CBC correspondent Graham Spry from London, in a series of European commentaries. He comments on "the atmosphere and state of mind in London". He comments on the different party stances in view of the possibility of a general election which must happen in the next twelve months. Spry also notes the presence in London of delegates to the Palestine Conference: Jewish representatives from across the world and Arabs from each of the 5 Arab nations meeting at St. James' Palace. Each group meets privately with Malcolm MacDonald, arriving and departing by separate entrances so that they do not meet each other. Rising unemployment has become a political question, but the main focus of attention in London is Europe: some feel optimism is well-founded. Others, like Winston Churchill, feel this optimism is unwarranted. Britain and France have re-affirmed their commitments to other European countries and each other. The Polish government has stiffened its attitude and been attacked in the German press. The Balkan Entente has shown signs of resisting any extension of political relations with Germany. Armament production in Britain and France has been increased. The Mediterranean and Spain are still crucial problems: Britain and France expect foreign troops to be withdrawn from Spain, but the war in Spain is not yet over. Italy is suspicious of the Catalonian army which has retreated into France. Britain and France are trying to secure a neutral, conservative Spain. <15mn>
