Interview by Mary Jane Miller of Philip Keatley, producer of television drama at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Keatley outlines his career beginning with his training in Britain as a producer and later as head of television drama in Vancouver and provides some background of the productions there including CARIBOO COUNTRY and some of the producers he worked with including Andrew Allan, Ira Dilworth, John Hirsch, Bill Underwood, Ron Weyman, writers Lister Sinclair, Alice Sinclair and Paul St. Pierre and directors Don Eccleson and Ray Whitehouse. He also talks about the Vancouver film unit, programs such as FREEDOM OF THE CITY (OPENING NIGHT) and KALESHNIKOFF, the new CBC studios in Vancouver, and the effect on the regions of the centralization of production. To conclude, Keatley focuses on television production in the 1980s with comments on the difficulties of producing art and drama productions in the regions, the future of CBC television in the technological age, training for directors of drama in Vancouver and the impact of budget cuts and layoffs at the CBC in Vancouver.
