The class is comprised of ledgers of imports and exports for England consisting of annual statistical reports on the nature and quantity of goods imported and exported, and the countries/colonies of origin or destination, for the port of London and English outports, 1696-1780. The segregation of imports from exports and the tabular format used in the reports facilitates analysis of the data on ports (or colonies) of origin and destination, raw materials and manufactured goods traded, values, duties paid, etc. There are several gaps in the records before 1728, but thereafter the annual sequence is complete. This material is located on microfilm reels B-6025 to B-6060.

An estimated 25% of the records in CUST 3 are Canada-related. The presentation of data in tables covering the whole empire sets trade in context, highlighting the growth of trade with the colonies of British North America and with Rupert's Land (the territory administered by the Hudson's Bay Company).
