The Retzlaff family emigrated from Germany in the 1920's and settled in Winnipeg. George Retzlaff started as a radio technician in Winnipeg before moving to Toronto to become the first Hockey Night in Canada television producer. As well as hockey, Retzlaff covered a wide variety of sports for television, including the Olympics, and the Canadian Open Golf Championship.
