Fonds consists of material pertaining to the history of the Communist Party of Canada in the early 1990s, covering the debates that took place within the CPC just before and after the collapse of the Soviet Union. This fonds also documents Gerry van Houten's time as a correspondent for the Canadian Tribune while living in East Berlin. This correspondence and associated material such as essays, articles and conference papers, reflect the issues and debates that took place within the communist movement at the time.

Van Houten, Gerry, 1947- : Gerry van Houten was a member of the Communist Party of Canada since 1971. In September 1986 he was a correspondent for the CPC publication the Canadian Tribune and was based in East Berlin. In January 1988 van Houten moved to Prague, Czechoslovakia and had the dual responsibility of acting as the CPC's representative on, and editing, the World Marxist Review.
