During 1919 over 16 million pounds of tobacco were grown in the counties of Kent and Essex, valued at $6 million.~This documentary shows the manner in which this tobacco is produced. Sequences are shown of: a man with a horse, plowing a tobacco field in the fall; two farmers unloading compost from a horse-drawn wagon for the preparation of seed beds; two men in a forest loading compost onto a horse-drawn wagon; two men sterilizing seed beds with steam to kill root rot and weed seeds - a boiler is shown in the middle of the field with the men sterilizing the seed beds in sections with the aid of a large, square lid; a man sowing seeds in the seed bed and pressing them down with a flat piece of wood while another man waters the seeds and places a cover on them; two men disking and harrowing a field with horse-drawn implements, ready for tobacco plants; two men fertilizing fields prior to planting with horse-pulled spreaders; men lifting covers on seed boxes to admit fresh air; plants in the seed boxes ready for transplanting; smaller plants left in the seed boxes being covered with canvas to encourage growth; man at the back of a tractor planting tobacco plants; man cultivating between rows of tobacco plants with a horse-drawn cultivator; farmers nipping buds from the top of tobacco plants and removing discoloured leaves from the bottom to aid the development of the plants; farmer placing a bag over the seed pod of a tobacco plant and tying it with string; a farmer inspecting large tobacco leaves on a plant; a farmer splitting tobacco plants down the centre and tobacco pickers placing split plants onto laths; using a second method, tobacco pickers hook tobacco plants onto sharp pointed laths; tobacco pickers handing laths loaded with tobacco plants to a man in a horse-drawn wagon who hangs them on rack in the wagon; and the fully loaded wagon entering the curing barn.~The curing of tobacco is illustrated with footage of: laths hanging eight inches apaart on tiers in the curing barn to allow the circulation of air; farmer opening kiln's door to show tobacco plants hanging inside the kiln; lower grade Burley tobacco being cured by air ventilation; a man opens the large vents on the outside of a large airing barn; tobacco leaves on laths in tiers hanging in curing barn; two men in a barn grading tobacco leaves and separating sand leaves from upper leaves; leaves being tied into separate hands and baled; two men tying the hands of tobacco leaves into bales of 60 lbs.; bales being loaded onto a gasoline driven truck; truck moving away; bales of tobacco being unloaded from a horse-drawn wagon onto a freight train; other wagons being unloaded at a warehouse; four farmers standing by a loaded wagon puffing on pipes; a wagon loaded with tobacco; tobacco shown as being worth $443,000 per 63 tons with 1 1/2 acres yielding $1100.00; and bales of tobacco being loaded onto a lake freighter at a small island in Lake Erie.
