Fonds consists of: views of northern Ontario showing mining, smelting, and prospecting; views of mines (interior and exterior) in Alberta; trip through mining areas in British Columbia; a black bound album containing primarily snapshots covering various aspects of the activities of Joseph de Hart including: fire at the engineering building and views of laboratories of McGill University, 1907; friends and possibly the family of J.B. de Hart; interior and exterior views of Canadian Copper Co. smelter at Copper Cliff, Ontario ca. 1910; fire at Cobalt, Ontario, July 1909; views near Gowganda, Ontario, 1910, including bush fires, miners, surveyors, engineers and canoemen among others, in camps; views near Cobalt, Ontario.

Also included are views of Coleman, Alberta, including the Denison Colliery; views through British Columbia taken on a tour of miners, particularly in the Rossland area; Lethbridge Colliery at Coalhurst, Alberta, 1912; York Creek, (Alberta or British Columbia], 1914; Low Level Bridge, Edmonton, Alberta, during the June 1915 flood; views of various colliery headframes in Alberta (probably in the Lethbridge and/or Drumheller areas); interior and exterior views of mining operations at Nacmine, near Drumheller, including underground views in the mining seams.

Biography/Administrative history:

De Hart, Joseph B : Joseph B. de Hart, mining engineer, was born in England and studied engineering at McGill University. He was mine manager at Nacmine, Drumheller, Alberta in 1922 and Coalhurst (near Lethbridge, Alberta) in 1923. He was also mine inspector for the Government of Alberta in the late 1920's. In 1937, de Hart was manager of mining properties for the Canadian Pacific Railway.
