This series documents Urjo Kareda's years as literary manager at the Stratford Theatre, and his unhappy experience as one member of the four-person directorate chosen to undertake the theatre's artistic management after the departure of Robin Phillips in 1980. The series includes incoming and copies of outgoing correspondence and memoranda, as well as notes, cast lists, résumés, articles and scripts. Personal correspondence files document Kareda's interactions with a variety of notable theatrical and literary figures, including Robertson Davies, Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, Pauline Kael, Margaret Tyzack, Pat Galloway, and Richard Monette. Memoranda files include copies of Kareda's notes to Robin Phillips on a wide range of subjects, including choices of dramatic texts, meetings with playwrights and authors, casting prospects and decisions, and a variety of daily issues affecting the running of the theatre. The files entitled 'La Chasse' document the search for an administrative structure to fill the place occupied by Robin Phillips, and subsequent files relating to the Directorate illustrate the members' ultimately unsuccessful attempt to replace Phillips. The series also contains a series of files of correspondence with playwrights - in the case of John Murrell, a correspondence which would endure until Kareda's death, and which is further documented in the Tarragon Theatre files. In addition, there are files relating specifically to two productions: a stage adaptation of The Book of Eve, and Foxfire, a projected vehicle for Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy.
