Trout, Jennie Kidd, 1841-1921 : Jennie Kidd Gowanlock Trout was born 21 April 1841 in Wooden Mills, Scotland. She came to Canada with her parents Andrew Gowanlock and Elizabeth Kidd in 1847. Upon arriving in Canada, the Gowanlocks lived on a ten acre farm just north of Stratford, Ontario. She married businessman Edward Trout on 25 August 1865. Jennie Kidd Trout was the first woman physician licensed to practice in Canada. She passed the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons matriculation exam in 1871. She then enrolled in the University of Toronto School of Medicine later that year and completed her courses in the spring of 1872. She continued her medical education for the next three years at the Women's Medical College in Pennsylvania. Kidd Trout received her M.D. degree from that institution on 11 March 1875 whereupon she returned to Toronto. On 13 May 1875, she passed the examination of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons at the age of thirty-four.
