Series consists of films that span a period from the 1930s to the 1970s, beginning with films made during the Grierson period at Britain's General Post Office Film Unit (GPO), through the establishment of the National Film Board of Canada, and continuing with regional film making in Saskatchewan. Included are documentaries on life on the Western Prairies, including works on co-operative farming and education, soil and water conservation, development of forage crops, prairie home electrification and renovation, and the struggle against erosion. The camera focuses as well on the celebration of Saskatchewan's Golden Jubilee in 1955, the construction of the Squaw Rapid Power Project, the 1945 Campaign film for the Labour Progressive Conservative Party, colour footage taken between 1939 and 1945 of the settling of farms at Rolling Hills Alberta, and a documentary of a Labour Youth visit to post-war Europe. Sample titles are: By their own strength; Land in trust; Windbreaks on the prairies; Prairie winter; Natural gas conservation; Geology; Alcohol in my land; Lindner; Glacial geology; Ground water; and Landscapes.

Also includes the film VALLEY CENTRE.

Also included are sound recordings, some of which document the career of John Grierson. Included are speeches and interviews with Grierson, interviews with Don Grier, Stan Rands, and Illingworth H. Kerr, Inuktituk and Frobisher Bay singers, the Iron Horse rock group at Frobisher Bay, and a reading by Jean Reti Forbes from her memoir entitled Child of the Prairie, 1972.

Dates of creation note:

Though the audio reel in accession 1987-0542 (MISA) is dated 1972, the reading was apparently done in 1965 from a manuscript prior to its being printed, and a recording of the reading was sent to Evelyn Cherry, who planned to make a film about Reti Forbes.
