Sub-series consists of records related to the work of the Advisory Committee on Nuclear Safety (ACNS). Included are meeting minutes, working group materials, background documents, ACNS publications, and more. Also included are sound recordings of the proceedings of the 23 March 2001 meeting (2002-0071 VSA). Textual materials are currently housed in boxes 1-20 of linked accession titled "Records from the Advisory Committee on Nuclear Safety ...".

Sub-series also consists of unprocessed administrative records (chiefly electronic) relating to ACNS scattered throughout boxes 30-32 of linked accession titled "Records of the Advisory Committee on Radiological Protection." In addition to electronic administrative files, books included in those accession boxes feature a list of descriptions of ACNS document numbers for the 27th to 71st meetings.

Canada. Advisory Committee on Nuclear Safety : The Advisory Committee on Nuclear Safety (ACNS) was established to make recommendations on proposed and existing regulations, licensing policies, standards and guidelines; to interpret new and existing information related to nuclear safety and advise on its relevance to the Board's regulatory function; to made recommendations on "appropriate" or "acceptable" levels of safety for the various activities regulated by the board, and on the means of demonstrating compliance and to advise on safety issues arising from the regulatory process.

Fifteen members were appointed to the committee by the Board. These members, who served for two years unless renewed by the Board, were chosen based on their experience and competence, as acknowledged by their peers, and their "independence and perceived independence" in areas related to the scope of the committee. The Chair was a member of the committee, designated by the committee. Ad hoc working groups were established by the ACNS on topics like radioactive waste management; public perception of nuclear risk; severe reactor accidents; software quality assurance; transport of radioactive material; institutional quality assurance and decommissioning; etc.
