Radio program with the opening ceremonies of the Alcan Highway at Soldier's Summit, British Columbia, broadcast from an improvised radio station on the back of an army truck, in which Peter Stursberg describes the scene; American Colonel R.B. Bush, and Master of Ceremonies, introduces The Honourable Ian A. MacKenzie, Minister of National Health and Pensions. The Hon. Ian A. MacKenzie reads a telegram from Prime Minister Mackenzie King expressing his regrets that he could not be there and congratulating the United States Army on its achievement. Then, on his own behalf, Mr. MacKenzie stresses the great friendship between Canada and the United States and hopes that the road will be used in peacetime "to the glory of God and the triumph of great causes". Mr. E.R. Bartlett, Secretary of State and acting Governor of Alaska, recalls the old routes to Alaska and hopes that a "complete transportation system" from the United States to Alaska will soon be built. He reads a telegram from Ernest Greening, Governor of Alaska, who is in Washington, and presents an Alaskan flag to Col. Bush. Colonel Bush accepts the flag. Brigadier-General James A. O'Connor, Commanding General of the North West Service Command, talks about the road and its significance, its unifying effect on Canada and the United States, and its future. He then cuts a ribbon to open the road and the first convoy to Fairbanks is heard rumbling by. <30mn>
