artistic material Polaroid photographs of the paintings are to be found in the accession file. The works were originally examined by Jim Burant in 1991 prior to their use in an exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Geological Survey of Canada.
Winnifred K. Bentley, a long-time employee of the Government of Canada, was apparently commissioned to copy these portraits for the Geological Survey of Canada, in the 1930s and early 1940s. These portraits, among others, featured distinguished Canadian naturalists and were intended to hang in the halls of the National Museum. The Annual Report of the National Museum for the fiscal year 1935-36 notes the completion and framing of the portraits of A.P. Coleman and Daniel Wilson.

Paintings were held in the vaults of the Geological Survey of Canada until May 1993, at which time they were transferred to the National Archives and added to the holdings of the National Portrait Collection.
