General Electric Company : General Electric (GE) is a diversified technology and services company. GE had its beginnings in 1878 with the establishment of Edison Electric Light Company by Thomas A. Edison. General Electric Company resulted from a merger between Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company in 1892. Since this time GE has grown significantly, operating in more than 100 countries and employing more than 300,000 people worldwide as of 2002. The company produces aircraft engines, locomotives and other transportation equipment, appliances (kitchen and laundry equipment), lighting, electric distribution and control equipment, generators and turbines, nuclear reactors, medical imaging equipment, and plastics. They also offer financial services including commercial finance, consumer finance, equipment management, and insurance units. General Electric also began producing motion picture films in the early 20th century. The films were designed to be free of commercial content, and were produced primarily for educational purposes. They were made available to schools, and to community, social and industrial organizations. Subjects included appliances, atomic energy, aviation, history, lighting, photography, radio and television, rural, specialized industrial, training, transportation, and X- Rays.
