Series consists of records relating to Operation Ready, a Cold War era exercise undertaken by the Canada Emergency Measures Organization 'to carry on an analysis of resources likely to survive following a nuclear attack, to prepare plans for survival and management of such resources and also to assess damages to local economies following peacetime disasters.' Operation Ready was modelled on a United States' study of potential nuclear devastation. The data employed by Canada EMO was amassed primarily according to 'the relative importance of the resource in relation to the objectives of the project, and the availability of published information about resources.' Therefore, Canada EMO's data reflected industries which were already being studied by other federal government departments, as part of existing census or statistics gathering programmes.
