Television public affairs program with host Adrienne Clarkson. This program begins in "medias res" with an interview of Arthur Koestler, author of "Darkness at Noon" (1941) and a communist journalist who was under sentence of death during the Spanish Civil War. Koestler talks to Clarkson about the similarities between his novel and his own experiences in prison; how he coped in solitary confinement; the difference between the reality and the abstraction of prison; when he became communist; and how he feels politically satisfied with his best known work, "Darkness at Noon". Includes still photographs of Koestler, Ernest Hemingway, André Malraux, and George Orwell (all involved in the Spanish Civil War); and film footage of Spain in 1936. Koestler also talks about his experiences in a French concentration camp (a luxury holiday compared to his experiences in Spain) and the help of the British (particularly Harold Nicholson) in getting him out. Koestler remarks that during the war, priorities were placed on the war itself and not the reasons for the war. Ends with film and stills of war. <30mn>
