Series consists of records created or maintained by the Radio and Electrical Engineering Division (REED) of the National Research Council (NRC).

Series consists of two collections of technical drawings documenting REED activities. The first collection consists of technical drawings from a variety of different projects relating to RADAR between 1941 and 1965 including:

The second collection of architectural and technical drawings (RG77M 1998-01180-1) is the product of the Engineering Design Section which was responsible for the drafting and standardization of project related drawings. The records, predominantly dating from 1943-1976, document REED's contribution in the development of wartime and peacetime technology. The records document the NRC's scientific achievements in diverse subjects such as radar technology, astrophysics, and computer design.

Series also consists of ca. 4000 photographs: of the radar work of Radio Branch during World War II; research undertaken by REED including aids to the blind and handicapped; antenna research; auroral research; avalanche warning system; Black Brant rocket research; crash position indicator; direction finders; electro-medical research; electron accelerator; electronic music; geiger counter; ground scatter studies; high voltage research; marine navigation; meteor research; microwave research; oscilloscopes; and pH monitors.

Series also consists of an additional ca. 930 weather satellite photographs taken 1964-1969 by Satellites Nimbus, ESSA, and ATS over North America as part of a joint project between the NRC and the Meteorological Branch of the Dept. of Transport.

National Research Council Canada. Radio and Electrical Engineering Division : The Radio Section was established in 1936 under the Division of Physics and Electrical Engineering. The name was changed to the Radio Branch in 1942 and in 1946 it was absorbed into the new Electrical Engineering and Radio Branch, which in turn ceased to exist in 1947 when it was folded into the new Division of Radio and Electrical Engineering. The name was formally changed to the Radio and Electrical Engineering Division (REED) in 1948. REED ceased to exist in 1976, when its functions became dispersed through separate divisions of the National Research Council (NRC), including but not limited to the Electrical Engineering Division.

Technical drawings (Electronic) Finding aid for the collection of technical drawings related to RADAR in volumes R1207 416 and 419-561 consists of: volume number, part, drawing count, drawing number range, project code, project name and general notes. 77-10 (90: Open)

Architectural, technical drawings, cartographic material (Paper) Finding aid consists of a subject index, a project number listing, and an itemized listing of drawings; these materials were what the National Research Council used to organize and navigate its collection of REED technical drawings. Researchers should consult this unverified finding aid to identify the drawing code for any drawings of potential interest. Researchers should consult, in order, the: 1. Subject Index, to narrow the subjects of potential interest (e.g., "AK" in a drawing code means the drawing relates to "detection equipment - marine"), 2. Listing of projects within each subject of potential interest (e.g., project "AK-1" indicates "Detection equipment - Marine microwave beacon"), 3. Itemized drawing list, which indicates drawing code and title (e.g., drawing "AK-1-24B" is a drawing of the Bakelite Spacer for project "AK-1"), as well as date and author. The finding aid consists of multiple binders located in containers with barcodes 2001072915 - 2001072922. To figure out which accession box contains a particular drawing, LAC's internal physical management system (subcontainer notes field) must be consulted using the drawing code. Note the alpha suffix in a drawing code indicates the approximate size of the drawing, ranging from letter-size or smaller (size/suffix "A") to up to four feet wide (size/suffix "E"). Custodial history:

RG77M 1998-01180-1: The architectural, technical drawings and maps in accession RG77M 1998-01180-1 were produced and collected by the Radio and Electrical Engineering Division (REED) of the National Research Council (NRC). When REED ceased to exist in 1976 they were used actively by the Electrical Engineering Division before being given to the NRC Archives. The NRC archives, running out of space, stored the architectural and technical drawings in cabinets in the basement of 100 Sussex. Records Services of the NRC arranged, folderised, boxed and inventoried prior to the transfer to the National Archives in 1999.

The John Tasker Henderson fonds (R1559-0-2-E) includes records related to the NRC's Radio Branch and other NRC areas. Dr. John T. Henderson, physicist, began with the NRC in 1933 as chief of the Radio Section; he retired in 1970, after two decades as head of the Electricity Section.
